If you’re staying at Lake Erie Shores, there’s a charming harbor town waiting just down the road. Ashtabula Harbor pairs independent shops and great food with a working waterfront.
Long before it became a favorite for weekend wandering, Ashtabula Harbor was one of the busiest ports on the Great Lakes, moving iron ore and coal to the steel mills of Ohio and Pennsylvania. Bridge Street grew up around that trade, and the brick buildings that line it today carry the character of that era. The district is on the National Register of Historic Places, and you can feel it as you walk. Nothing about it feels staged. It simply feels lived in.
Bridge Street is made for browsing without a checklist. The shops are independently owned, and each one has its own personality.
Carlisle’s Home in the Harbor is a lovely place to start, with seasonal gifts and home accents arranged so that no two visits look the same. Bridge Street Art Works is a gallery of original pieces from local artisans, and it also hosts classes and evening events if you want to make an afternoon of it. Along the way you will find handcrafted soaps and beauty products, one-of-a-kind jewelry, and artisan chocolates, which make a very good souvenir.
Begin at Harbor Perk, where a coffee at a sidewalk table sets the tone for the day. When hunger arrives, you have two good directions. Harbor Halcyon is the spot for a hearty sit-down meal, and Nights & Weekends Pizzeria is the one for an elevated-casual pie in a historic building. Either way, you are only steps from the shops and the water.
The Ashtabula River is the heart of the harbor, and it is worth a few unhurried minutes on its own. The historic lift bridge rises every half hour to let boats pass, which makes for a perfect excuse to pause, coffee in hand. Stroll the waterfront and watch the fishing charters head out toward open water. If you want to be out on the water yourself, kayak and paddleboard rentals are available just beyond the bridge. Stroll the waterfront, watch the charter boats head toward open water, and enjoy the view. If you want to be out on the water yourself, kayak and paddleboard rentals are available at Harbor Yak.
For a little more history, the Ashtabula Maritime and Surface Transportation Museum overlooks the harbor and tells the story of the port. Beach glass hunters may also want to visit nearby Walnut Beach, where the shoreline rewards patient eyes and the view stretches out to the Ashtabula Lighthouse.
What makes Ashtabula Harbor special is how easy it is to enjoy. Park once, walk everywhere, and let the day unfold between a gallery, a good lunch, and a seat by the water. Then return to Lake Erie Shores, where the evening is yours to spend by the fire pit or on the patio, wherever the lake breeze finds you.
